SEO Dirty Secret #2

If you do any reading in the seo space, you'll read that directories are dead. You'd read that it's a waste of time to submit your site to any but a handfull of directories.

It's all crap.

SEO techniques go through an evolutionary peried of: Something new, abused, banned, and then properly balanced.

Remember forums? Yes, they are still around and they still provide great links. Not in the signatures, but the content that gets linked an referenced within the forum. Guestbooks - amazingly, there are still many sites that still use these. They were once the seo's link haven. But like all good tricks, they got abused, Google dramtically reduced their value, so seo's stopped spending time getting links there (although spammers do, since the end game is all about the quantity of links, not quality).

Which brings us to directories. A few years ago (2004!) directories where they key to getting ranked. But like all things seo, that practice got abused and Google responded accordingly by reducing their value in determining ranks for sites. But here's why directories will NEVER be reduced in value at a certain level.

To understand why, let's look at how Google views the web. Right now, it's almost all links, text and category organization. Directories are naturally organized to sequentially lead a user to their desired topic of choice. This categorization helps the search engines correctly label, classify and rank websites. THIS IS WHY DIRECTORIES WILL ALWAYS BE USEFUL IN GETTING RANKED!

But, I don't mind watching all the 'experts' talk down about how badly directories are. But if you were to look at my results page, all those rankings were achieved with directory submission as a fundamental strategy.

Enjoy the ride,
Paul Bliss
