Domain Resetting

One of the main selling points of a domain is sometimes the "old" links that are pointing to the site.

But, Google being Google (do no evil, remember?) has decided that whenever the ownership of a domain name changes in the WHOIS database, they are going to reset the "link value" of all the known links to zero.

Why does this matter?

Think about all the ebay auctions, SEDO and any domain name marketplace that lists the in-bound links as part of the value of getting that domain.

Google has just killed that notion.

They have again, swooped in and decided that something they had a key role in creating (links are the gold of the internet), is only relevant when and if they decide it to be. Webmasters let the Google machine consume all the pages of thier sites in return for the hope of top rankings, all the while Google profits not only from the site, but advertisers who are willing to pay for top billing.

It doesn't bother me that Google scrapes and ranks content and also takes people willing to pay to get to the top. What bothers me is how they continue to change the rules, potentially put smart working people out of business, just so that they can grow their already overvalued stock price instead of focusing on what they *used* to be the best at.

Search.
