Domaining as a Brand Strategy

One of the great things that come along with owning a domain name is the perception you inherit when a visitor lands on your site. One of the great things about search is that a visitor has an open mind and is ready and willing to be influenced and the information they find will help to form their decision to buy a product or service.

Blend the two together and you have one heck of a marketing strategy.

So why don't more companies take advantage of this?
The simple answer is that most companies don't know the value a category or generic domain name brings. Sure, they understand branding, but they are completely missing the boat when it involves domains. Think that Hilton or Hyatt would love to go back in time and acquire "Hotels.com?"

So how can you build the brand with domains? For this argument, I'll serve up this site as an example. Knowing how impressions are made when someone searches, and recognizing the opportunities that are still out there, I spent only about two hours going through a keyword list of seo-related search phrases that had at least 1 search per month. Then I tested those same phrases in Google to make sure there was some real interest in those terms. The next step was to register the domains that had some search traffic, and then re-direct those domains to particular pages of this site.

Why do this?
It's simple. People are always asking questions about pricing in the seo space, and some seo's don't reveal their fees on their sites, while others do. So, there are searches occurring for the prices of seo such as:
  • SEO Fees
  • Search Engine Optimization Pricing
I acquired the dot com versions of those domains and forward them to our pricing page. So, what we've done is help educate and define to the general public, what the expectations should be when looking for seo services from a provider.

It's a given that only a small percentage of readers will convert into buyers of the seo services, but buy OWNING the domain name, the PERCEPTION that we are one of the knowledge leaders in regards to seo pricing, helps us sell our services with much less resistance.

I'm sure there are many domains in your vertical that are still available or can be acquired for a reasonable price. How can you take advantage of this fantastic opportunity?

Enjoy the ride,
Paul Bliss
