Inside the Mind of a Black Hatter

It always makes me laugh when I hear about people complaining about some "spammer" who has knocked them out of a top ranking in Google.

Most times, it's by some site that has no business being there and in a few weeks, Google has booted the questionable site and all is well for awhile, until the next site of the black hatter arrives.

I personally think black hatters are essential and provide balance to the game that Google dictates. The black hat constantly looks and finds holes in the algorithms, and then exploits them for money. What's wrong with that?

In the 90's, it was an issue. You'd enter some search term for kids clothing and get porn site instead. Those days are long gone - not because of Google mind you, but because the black hats realized that no matter how much you try to force something, if the person isn't currently looking for what is presented to them, they aren't going to buy.

So why does spam still exist? Because folks, people STILL click and BUY from some the of emails they get. If they could just learn not to click, SPAM would die off.

So back to the search black hat. As a customer, do I really care how a website got a #1 ranking in Google? Probably not. As long as I get the product or service I was looking for, I DON'T CARE about the "ethics" on how the site in question earned it's rankings.

As the proctector of it's product (search results, not the search algorithm itself) Google has to try to maintain some level of authority when it comes to ranking the sites in it's index. So, they scare webmasters by telling them they are not allowed to sell links on their own sites, at the risk of not being found in Google's search results, or to place the "NoFollow" attribute on any links they don't want Google to count.

Absolutely amazing that they get soo many to drink their kool-aid. This is perhaps why I love the attitude of the black hatter. They challenge the system that is Google search, and they win. Even if it's only for a week, in that time they have made an easy six-figure income. They force Google to continually improve it's algorithm as they find holes in the algorithm.

The best part is, no matter how hard they try, Google will NEVER be able to eliminate the black hat from existance. Google created the monster that they must now employ in order to stay in business. Ironic, isn't it?

Enjoy the ride,
Paul Bliss
