Making Your Mark in the Search World

So, you've been reading blogs, forums, articles and ebooks on everything related to search from properly coding your site to "tagging" whatever the latest thing it is you are promoting.

So after you get the hang of it, you realize that not only do you have the skill, (you have a couple top rankings in Google), and the passion (you look forward to reading posts from your favorite bloggers/authors) and you know that working in the search world is where your career lies.

You've also been to a few conference events, (SES, SMX, Pubcon, etc) and met the likes of Matt Cutts, Greg Boser and maybe even bumped into Danny Sullivan at the Googleplex.

So now you're hooked, and you want to make a name for yourself.

How do build up your name?

First, you need to eliminate what's already out there:

Write an ebook about seo? Already done.
Talk about linkbaiting? Patel is one of the best.
Be an absolute "WhiteHat" seo? Jill Whalen's got that locked up.
Be an absolute "BlackHat" seo? QuadsZilla runs a forum on some great techniques.
Create a set of SEO Tools? Bruce Clay has that covered.

That's just the tip of the 'ol iceberg. If you want to "get famous" you'll have to do something that no one else is talking about, be controversial, or make outlandish statements to get some attention.

And of course, you'll have to back it all up when a client comes knocking at your door.

Enjoy the ride,
Paul Bliss
