Social Bookmarking - Why Participate? | ||
|
Let's see, at last count there were at least 125 social bookmarking sites worth paying attention to.
That seems like a motherload of sites to keep track of, and if you have the time to actively participate in all of them, please contact me and I'll hire you to build up my user profiles on all of them too. So, how do you know which ones to pay attention to? Do you have personal accounts at each site? Or do you have "business" personas as well so that you can submit "stories" for your clients? How can you know what the payoff is for the time spent to build up "power accounts" for each site? While there are some easy choices to make (digg, StumbleUpon, etc), what about some more obscure sites like Thoof? The cream ultimately rises to the top and you always have a constant flux of new users joining while the power accounts continue to get stronger based on their participation. Do you have the time to build up to an account like to powers users at digg? I think the bigger question should be - is this something I can sell? Would a potential client even understand the value of using a service that has a power account? (SEOMoz does a great job of this). So for some places, it makes perfect sense to take the time and become and well known user of the site. A great example would be if you were a worm farmer, and some social networking site was created based on farming. That would be a sure-fire place that you would need to have a presence - that way you could share your expertise with the readers who want to learn more, and build the account as a power user.
